Pro-Model UHF/VHF TV Antenna

The Channel Master Pro-Model UHF/VHF TV Antenna (CM-1776) was specifically developed around a professional grade approach to construction and serviceability.

The Pro-Model is manufactured in Chandler, Arizona. Its boom and antenna elements use high quality 6061 and 6063 aluminum, with the aluminum components extruded, cut, and drilled in the United States. The design intentionally minimizes the amount of plastic used, while the plastic components that are necessary are manufactured from UV resistant ASA and PVC materials. 

The Pro-Model also uses a separate professional grade 75 ohm balun with a weatherproof metal housing and replaceable leads. Rather than permanently integrating the matching transformer into the antenna, the design allows this component to be serviced or replaced if necessary. 

The antenna is based on a traditional directional element design engineered around RF performance while maintaining a relatively compact physical size. It is optimized for the current post repack television spectrum, covering 54 to 216 MHz for VHF and 470 to 608 MHz for UHF, with realized passive gain up to 9.7 dB on UHF and 5.9 dB on VHF. 

Another advantage of the Pro-Model is its modular construction. Individual elements are replaceable, and optional UHF and VHF extension sections can be added when an installation requires additional passive antenna gain. The UHF extension can increase UHF realized gain by approximately 4 to 5 dB, while the VHF extension can increase VHF realized gain by approximately 2 to 3 dB. 

This means a consumer can start with the standard Pro-Model and later expand the antenna for more challenging or deep fringe reception conditions rather than replacing the complete antenna.

Yes. One TV antenna can provide signals to multiple televisions.

A passive splitter is usually the simplest solution when the antenna provides sufficient signal strength. Each connected television has its own tuner, so the televisions can independently watch different available Over the Air channels.

However, every passive splitter introduces insertion loss.

A two way splitter commonly introduces approximately 3.5 to 4 dB of loss at each output. A four way splitter commonly introduces approximately 7 to 8 dB of loss at each output. The coaxial cable running to each television introduces additional attenuation.

If the signals received by the antenna are strong enough to tolerate these losses, a passive splitter may be all that is required.

A distribution amplifier can be useful when the antenna receives good quality signals but the losses from splitting and distributing those signals would otherwise leave insufficient signal level at the televisions.

Do not add a distribution amplifier simply because multiple televisions are connected. Amplification should be used to compensate for actual signal losses when necessary.

For larger systems, estimate or measure the signal available from the antenna, subtract the expected coaxial cable, splitter, and other passive losses for each television, then determine whether additional amplification is needed.

For the best possible reception and overall user experience, Channel Master recommends installing the antenna outdoors whenever practical.

Choose a location that provides a favorable signal path toward the desired broadcast towers while minimizing nearby obstructions such as buildings, trees, metal structures, and other objects.

For most residential installations, an eave or roofline location is practical because it can position the antenna above much of the surrounding structure without requiring an unnecessarily tall mast.

If your home previously had satellite television service, the existing satellite dish mount can also be an excellent option. In many cases, the old satellite dish can be removed and a compatible TV antenna can be clamped directly to the existing mast, provided the mount remains structurally sound and the location provides a suitable path toward the television broadcast towers.

Before permanently routing and securing the coaxial cable, test reception at the proposed antenna location whenever practical.

Moving an antenna even a relatively short distance horizontally or vertically can sometimes change reception because of terrain, obstructions, and reflected signals.

Channel Master recommends that outdoor TV antenna systems be properly grounded and bonded in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable local electrical codes.

Channel Master does not provide universal step by step grounding instructions because the correct grounding and bonding method depends on the building's electrical grounding system, antenna installation, applicable electrical codes, and requirements adopted by the local jurisdiction.

An outdoor antenna installation can involve separate grounding or bonding requirements for the metal antenna mast or supporting structure and the coaxial cable entering the building. Grounding only the coaxial cable should not automatically be assumed to satisfy every requirement associated with the antenna mast and supporting structure.

For installation specific grounding guidance, Channel Master recommends consulting a qualified professional antenna installer or licensed electrician familiar with the electrical requirements in your area.

Install the antenna high enough to provide a favorable signal path toward the desired broadcast towers while reducing important nearby obstructions, but do not assume that the antenna must automatically be installed as high as physically possible.

Additional height can help when it allows the antenna to clear a roofline, nearby buildings, trees, terrain, or other significant obstructions.

For many residential installations with favorable predicted signals, an eave, wall, or roofline installation using a relatively short mast provides sufficient height.

Tall telescoping masts and antenna towers are generally more appropriate for difficult rural or deep fringe installations, or locations where terrain, trees, buildings, or other major obstructions make additional elevation beneficial.

Distance alone should not determine antenna height. A home relatively close to the broadcast towers can still have difficult reception because of terrain or obstructions, while a more distant home with a favorable signal path may perform well at conventional roofline height.

The goal is to obtain reliable signal quality and adequate signal strength at a practical and structurally secure mounting height.

A preamplifier is not automatically required with an outdoor TV antenna.

A preamplifier is most useful when the antenna receives usable but relatively weak signals and additional gain is needed before those signals experience losses from coaxial cable, splitters, and other components.

A preamplifier may be beneficial when important stations have relatively weak predicted or measured signal levels, there is a long coaxial cable run between the antenna and television, the antenna signal will be divided among multiple televisions, or the combined cable and splitter losses would leave insufficient signal level at the receivers.

If signals at the antenna are already strong, adding a preamplifier may provide no benefit. Excessive amplification can overload the preamplifier or television tuner and can actually make reception worse.

A preamplifier also cannot correct poor signal quality caused by severe interference or multipath.

The best approach is to evaluate the predicted or measured signal levels at the antenna and consider how much signal will be lost through the coaxial distribution system before deciding whether amplification is necessary.

Start by determining whether the problem affects all channels or only certain channels.

First, verify that the antenna is properly installed, securely connected to the coaxial cable, and positioned correctly for the desired broadcast towers. Check the coaxial connections at the antenna, television, and any components installed between them.

Make sure your television is configured for Antenna, Air, Broadcast, or Over the Air, rather than Cable, and perform an Over the Air channel scan.

If you receive some channels but others are missing, compare the missing stations with the stations you are receiving. Different stations can broadcast from different tower locations, use different RF frequencies, and arrive at your home with different signal strengths.

If your antenna system contains a preamplifier, splitter, distribution amplifier, filter, wall plate, or other component, those components and their connections should also be checked.

Do not automatically add an amplifier because channels are missing. Weak signal level is only one possible cause. Poor antenna direction, interference, multipath, damaged coaxial cable, poor connectors, excessive distribution loss, or amplifier overload can also cause reception problems.

Yes. An outdoor TV antenna can generally be painted for aesthetic purposes, but care must be taken not to interfere with any of the antenna's electrical connections.

Paint is generally electrically insulating. Some parts of an antenna rely on direct metal to metal contact between elements, feed points, fasteners, balun connections, or other conductive components. If paint gets between surfaces that are intended to make electrical contact, it can increase resistance or prevent the electrical connection from working properly.

Do not apply paint to coaxial connectors, F-ports, balun terminals, exposed electrical contact surfaces, or areas where two conductive antenna components make electrical contact.

Also avoid applying excessive paint around hinges, folding elements, clamps, fasteners, or other moving mechanical parts.

For an outdoor installation, use a paint suitable for outdoor exposure and compatible with the materials used in the antenna.

Yes, provided sufficient physical space and signal margin are available. However, Channel Master strongly recommends outdoor installation for the best possible reception and overall user experience.

An attic places additional building materials between the antenna and the broadcast towers. Roofing materials, wood, insulation, radiant barriers, metal ductwork, wiring, and other materials can attenuate, reflect, or otherwise alter television signals before they reach the antenna.

The amount of signal loss is difficult to predict because every building is different. An attic installation that works well in one home may perform significantly worse in another home with otherwise similar outdoor signal conditions.

Attics can also create signal reflections and multipath that make antenna positioning and aiming less predictable.

For these reasons, outdoor installation is the preferred installation method. An attic installation should generally be considered when outdoor installation is not practical and the predicted signal levels provide sufficient margin for the additional loss introduced by the building.

The front of the antenna is the narrower end with the shorter elements. The opposite end, which typically has the longer and wider elements, is the back.

Point the front of the antenna toward the TV broadcast towers you want to receive.

This antenna is directional and has an approximately 90 degree reception beamwidth. This means it receives signals most effectively from the general area in front of the antenna rather than equally from every direction.

If the broadcast towers for your desired stations are grouped within approximately the same 90 degree area, point the front of the antenna toward the center of that group. You do not normally need to point the antenna individually at every station within its useful reception pattern.

The tower direction should be considered the starting point. Buildings, trees, terrain, reflections, and other local conditions can affect reception. After establishing the initial direction, make small adjustments if necessary while checking the desired channels, then securely tighten the antenna so it cannot rotate.
