When Channel Master began developing the Pro-Floodlight, we did not start with a long list of features. We started with a question.
Solving the Right Problem
Installing outdoor smart devices has become easier than ever thanks to Wi-Fi, but providing reliable power where it is needed remains surprisingly difficult.
If power already exists exactly where a floodlight should be installed, the job is simple. When it does not, homeowners are often left choosing between installing new electrical wiring, relying on solar or battery-powered lights, or using an extension cord that was never intended as a permanent solution.
We believed there should be another option.
Instead of extending high-voltage electrical wiring, the Pro-Floodlight delivers 24-volt DC power over standard RG-6 coaxial cable. Homeowners run a coaxial cable from the included power adapter, plugged into an existing outdoor GFCI receptacle, to wherever they want the light installed.
Coaxial cable is inexpensive, easy to route and suitable for outdoor installations when the appropriate cable is used. This creates a dependable low-voltage solution that is easier to install than a new electrical circuit while providing the consistent power expected from a hard-wired outdoor floodlight.
Once that challenge was solved, the rest of the product naturally followed the same philosophy.
Building Around a Mature Smart Home Platform
Rather than trying to recreate every possible automation feature inside the light itself, we chose to build around a smart home platform that already excels at them.
Apple Home provides scheduling, sunrise and sunset automations, scenes, remote access and integration with compatible smart home accessories. By allowing Apple Home to provide the intelligence, the Pro-Floodlight remains focused on what it was designed to do: deliver dependable outdoor lighting.
Focusing on Apple Home also allowed our engineering team to optimize the product around one ecosystem instead of dividing development and ongoing software maintenance across multiple smart home platforms.
A focused product is often a more reliable product.
Let Every Device Do Its Own Job
One lesson we discovered while evaluating outdoor lighting was that combining multiple functions into a single device does not always produce the best result.
Motion detection is a good example. The ideal location for a floodlight is often high on an eave where it can illuminate the widest possible area. The ideal location for detecting motion, however, may be lower and closer to a walkway, gate, driveway entrance or other specific detection area.
When we evaluated outdoor motion-sensing lights already on the market, a common customer complaint was that the sensor was either not sensitive enough or was too sensitive. In many cases, the problem was not necessarily the sensor itself. It was the fact that the sensor was permanently attached to the light and therefore had to be installed wherever the light was mounted.
Separating these functions allows each device to be placed where it performs best. Apple Home can allow a compatible standalone motion sensor to activate the Pro-Floodlight, giving homeowners more flexibility to position the sensor closer to the area where motion actually needs to be detected.
Instead of forcing lighting and motion detection into the same housing, each product can concentrate on performing its own job well.
The same philosophy applies to dusk-to-dawn operation. Apple Home can trigger the light using sunrise and sunset times, automatically adjust throughout the seasons and incorporate the light into broader home automations. There is no need to duplicate that intelligence with another dedicated sensor inside the fixture.
Designed Around Everyday Use
Modern electronics often provide nearly endless customization, but thoughtful design requires understanding which adjustments people actually use.
For outdoor lighting, most homeowners want bright, natural-looking illumination that improves visibility around driveways, walkways, patios and entryways. Once installed, few people regularly change the color temperature of their exterior floodlights.
Rather than adding additional LEDs, controls and electronics to provide a setting that may rarely change, we optimized the Pro-Floodlight around a carefully selected neutral white color temperature. It is intended to provide clear visibility and natural-looking illumination across a wide range of outdoor applications.
Sometimes thoughtful engineering means making fewer decisions so homeowners do not have to.
Starting Where the Need Was Greatest
Interestingly, the first product we envisioned using power delivered over coaxial cable was not a floodlight. It was a camera.
As development continued, however, it became clear that battery-powered and solar-powered outdoor cameras had already become remarkably capable. Many cameras can operate for long periods between charges because their overall power requirements are relatively low.
Bright outdoor lighting presents a different challenge.
A useful floodlight consumes considerably more power than a camera. Battery-powered and solar-powered lighting therefore comes with greater compromises involving brightness, operating time, charging conditions and ongoing battery maintenance.
Solar charging may also be less effective in shaded locations, during periods of poor weather or wherever the ideal placement of the light does not provide the ideal exposure for a solar panel.
Outdoor lighting was where delivering dependable low-voltage power over coaxial cable could create the greatest immediate advantage. That made the Pro-Floodlight the right place to introduce the concept.
Engineering for the Long Term
Every product requires hundreds of decisions. Some add capabilities. Others preserve simplicity.
With the Pro-Floodlight, our objective was not to build the longest feature list. It was to create a dependable outdoor lighting solution that addresses a meaningful installation problem, is straightforward to use and can continue performing reliably for years.
That philosophy has guided Channel Master for more than 75 years through the design of antennas, amplifiers and signal-distribution products. As we expand into smart home technology, it will continue to guide the products we develop.
The Pro-Floodlight is the beginning of a broader approach to smart home products built around purposeful design, dependable performance and close integration with Apple Home.
Sometimes the smartest product is not the one with the most features. It is the one that solves the right problem with simplicity, reliability and thoughtful engineering.
