In the past, connecting a new device to either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz was surprisingly straightforward. If your router broadcast two networks, one labeled 2.4 GHz and another labeled 5 GHz, you simply picked the one you wanted. It was not particularly elegant, but it worked.

Although your phone may show only one Wi-Fi network name, your router can be operating several wireless bands behind it. The network name, also called the SSID, is the familiar label you select in your Wi-Fi settings. Modern routers often use that single name across every available band.
The router then tries to place each device on the connection it considers most appropriate. A nearby phone may use 5 GHz for higher speed, while a smart device at the edge of the home may connect over 2.4 GHz for better reach.

That is because Wi-Fi is not only about maximum speed. The 2.4 GHz band generally reaches farther and performs better through walls and floors than higher-frequency bands.
For lights, switches, thermostats, locks, sensors, and outdoor devices that exchange relatively small amounts of information, dependable coverage can matter much more than raw bandwidth.

Modern single SSID Wifi systems were designed to make connectivity feel effortless, one network name, broad coverage, seamless roaming, and automatic band selection.

A phone can remain connected over 5 GHz while the accessory being added supports only 2.4 GHz. Devices on different bands can normally communicate through the same local network, so this alone should not prevent setup. Some routers provide a setting specifically for devices that need help during their first connection. Eero, for example, allows the user to temporarily pause the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands while keeping 2.4 GHz available.

With the higher-frequency bands paused, the phone reconnects over 2.4 GHz and the smart home accessory can complete its setup under simpler network conditions. Once the process is finished, the network returns to normal operation.
It is a small feature, but it removes much of the guesswork from adding devices that are particular about the way their initial Wi-Fi connection is established.

Use the final location
For an accessory that will live outdoors or far from the router, try performing setup near its intended installation point.
Restart and retry
Restart the router, phone, and accessory, then carefully repeat the manufacturer's setup process from the beginning.

When a new smart home device doesn't connect during setup, it's easy to assume something is wrong with the device itself. After all, your phone, laptop, smart TV, and dozens of other devices may already be connected to the same Wi-Fi network without any issues. It's only natural to think the newest device must be the problem.

Modern Wi-Fi networks have become incredibly sophisticated. Features like mesh networking, automatic band steering, and single SSID designs are all intended to make home networking simpler and more reliable.
